Jhené Aiko gave fans three days’ notice. On September 8, 2026 she announced her new album. On September 11 it was everywhere. Westside Whimsy is her first studio album since Chilombo arrived in March 2020, six years later. Twenty tracks, 55 minutes, and a guest list that reads like a map of Los Angeles hip hop: Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Larry June, Tyga, and OHMA. No press campaign. Just the album.
Who Jhené Aiko Is and Why the Wait Mattered
Jhené Efuru Chilombo was born March 16, 1988 in Los Angeles. She grew up in South LA and started her career with the mixtape Sailing Soul(s) in 2011, a project that became a cult favorite long before it hit streaming platforms. Her debut album Souled Out arrived in 2014. Trip followed in 2017. Then came Chilombo in 2020, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and earned three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. Since then she kept releasing singles, toured with The Magic Hour Tour in 2024, and joined Chris Brown for his Breezy Bowl XX tour.

What the Features Are Saying
The guest list is not random. Kendrick Lamar appears on “So Good,” produced by Sounwave, a back-and-forth between two artists whose relationship goes back to 2010, when Jhené appeared on Kendrick’s Overly Dedicated mixtape. They reconnected in 2013 on “Stay Ready (What a Life)” and shared space again on Playboi Carti’s “Backd00r” in 2025. On “So Good,” the energy is different from anything Kendrick has done in the last two years: relaxed, melodic, West Coast intimate. Ab-Soul, also from the Los Angeles rap underground, appears on “Love Bomb.” Larry June handles “Neighbors,” a pairing that makes complete sense given that June has spent his entire career building an aesthetic around California culture, cruising, and the same laid-back precision that defines Jhené’s music. The guest list is Los Angeles talking to itself.
